28 de septiembre de 2011, deINTERNATIONAL SEMINARS – Civis Association, together with the Andes University and the Collective action of conscientious objectors (ACOOC) of Bogotá, would like to invite you to the International Seminars "The regulation of the right to conscientious objection - scope and limitations in the context of armed conflict", to be held at the Andes University in Bogota (Colombia) on October 27th, 2011, and at the University of Bucaramanga (Colombia), on October 28th, 2011. There will be a live transmission of the seminar on October 27th on the website www.civis.se. Video: Indigenous women forcibly displaced from their land
28 de septiembre de 2011, deINTERVIEW - Iria and her community had lived their whole life in the Santa Rosa de Guayacán reservation, located at the San Juan and Bajo Calima river basins in the Valle del Cauca department. One year ago, August 4, 2010, they had to leave forcibly their reservation because of multiple death threats. Iria was now interviewed by Peace Brigades International and explains to them the serious consequences they have suffered during their stay in the port city of Buenaventura and why they decided recently to return in August 2011 to their Santa Rosa de Guayacán reservation, exactly one year after their forced displacement. Buenaventura, Colombia: where free trade meets mass graves
28 de septiembre de 2011, deRESEARCH - In April, President Obama and Juan Manuel Santos, the president of Colombia, reinitiated discussions on establishing a free trade agreement. Conditions in Buenaventura exemplify the inherent contradictions of pursuing a free trade agreement with a country where an internal armed conflict continues to rage, where many people are mired in poverty, where workers are subject to abuses, and labor unions are quite literally under attack. (Nationwide, 51 Colombian unionists were murdered in 2010 alone, making Colombia home to the world’s highest rate of trade-unionist killings.) Manifiesto for land and peace: people speak out
28 de septiembre de 2011, dePUBLIC DECLARATION - A mass meeting with more than 20.000 people of rural and national non-governmental organisations was held in the city of Barrancabermeja between 12th and 14th August. The main objective was to analyse the situation of Colombian rural society and to set out a programme for achieving solutions to the problems faced by peasant, afrodescendent and indigenous communities. Among the main problems underlined was the existence of military conflict, and the imposition of an economic model that favours foreign companies and large landowners over the interests of the majority of Colombians. The difficult conditions that were forced upon them, compounded by the surrounding urbanization and the steady image of “progress”, further distanced them from a government that refuses to recognize their dignity.
