“Intersectionality in Practice” – Conference held in Gothenburg, 29-30 November
11 de noviembre de 2011, deINVITATION - The conference “Intersectionality in Practice” will be held on 29-30 of November 2011 at The Museum of World Culture in central Gothenburg. The conference is a part of a project that Civis operates with support from Ungdomsstyrelsen. With the event Civis aims to create an interesting and interactive forum for academics and practitioners to meet and open up for new collaboration. As Civis’s other activities the conference will highlight and put young people in focus. The conference’s project manager Janan Zapata states: “The conference focuses on the theme of intersectionality as a working method. Our understanding is that the somewhat blunt term intersectionality sometimes is perceived as something deterrent and it can create a distance between academics and practitioners. Civis wish with the conference is to challenge these barriers and convey the essence of the concept in an easy and accessible way. We want to show how the perspective of intersectionality can be used in practice, inspire to new ideas and open up for future collaborations between different actors. “ LEER MÁS...

Unfortunately, conscientious objection in Colombia is still seen as something ilegal and unpatriotic, although the Constitutional Court in Colombia sentenced in 2009 that conscientious objection towards compulsory military service is a fundamental right. 11 de noviembre de 2011, deGRAFFITI - In mid-July 2011, the “Emancipation” project, with support from the Leteo Association, began a training process that gradually was transformed into a meeting place for knowledge sharing on issues including human rights, non-violence, conscientious objection, and the role of young people when faced with violations of their rights. Thanks to the support of Civis Sweden and the backing of the community in the San Francisco neighbourhood, more than 70 young people from Madrid and nearby municipalities met on September 10 and 11, 2011 to transform a five-meter high, nearly 40-meter long wall. Carlos Gaviria: “In a Real Democracy, Armies Are Unnecessary”
11 de noviembre de 2011, deCONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION – Two international conferences were held in Colombia in late October on the fundamental right to conscientious objection to mandatory military service in Colombia, organized by Civis Sweden: one at Los Andes University in Bogota (October 27) and one at the Guane Hotel in Bucaramanga (October 28), with more than 400 participants. National and international experts took part in both events, including Carlos Gaviria (former presidential candidate, Colombia); Manuel Iturralde (Los Andes University); Asier Santillán (European Union); Mariana Castrellón (Los Andes University); Juan Carlos Obando (Serpaj – Ecuador); Sebastían Machado (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia); Michael Thurman (Courage to resist, United States); Francesc Riera (University of the Basque Country); Julián Andrés Ovalle (ACOOC); and Andrea García Morales (Medellin Youth Network). United States, Spain and Ecuador: Experiences of Conscientious Objectors
11 de noviembre de 2011, deINTERVIEWS – As part of two international conferences held in October in Colombia regarding the fundamental right to conscientious objection (CO) to compulsory military service, national and international experts came to share different perspectives on the importance of conscientious objection. Find here more facts about CO and the interesting life stories of Michael Thurman from the United States, member of the San Francisco based organization “Courage to Resist,” of Francesc Riera from Spain and of Ecuadorian Juan Carlos Obando from Serpaj. Civis had the opportunity to learn about the initiatives that they have undertaken to denounce the militarization of the social, political and cultural life in their countries, as well as the actions that they have led in order to guarantee the recognition of the fundamental right to CO.
