July 2011, Colombia: International Youth Forum

Domingo 19 de junio de 2011, de Comunicación Civis

EXCHANGE - For the dignity of young people! CONCLAEA and the CLOC - Vía Campesina will organize the first International Youth Forum in Colombia, supported by Civis, to be held in the department of Cauca from July 2 to 18, 2011. The event will include international speakers from the MST (Brazil), Experiences against Agribusiness (Nicaragua), and a Cuban representative of the Social Movements’ ALBA. 150 representatives from more than 13 countries and 300 young people from different parts of Colombia will participate. The objective is to foster an exchange of experiences, knowledge and proposals on crucial issues facing Colombia’s and America’s young people, social organizations and sectors.

The proposal links three processes into one: the Tenth Caribbean and Latin American Congress of Agronomy Students’ Organizations (CLACEEA), the First Vía Campesina Youth Encampment in Colombia, and the Seventh National Days of Peasant and Indigenous Experiences. All of the events allow participation from a diverse range of youth organizations (student, peasant, indigenous, urban) that have been walking the path of resistance and youth and student mobilization.

1) CLACEEA: The Caribbean and Latin American Federation of Agronomy Students’ Organizations (CONCLAEA) has been building and organizing the CLACEEA for 20 years. This congress is the highest level forum for training, discussion and decision-making for organized students of agronomy and related sciences in the continent. The CLACEEA is a strategic arena for coordination and strengthening of the Latin American and Caribbean student movement.

2) The First CLOC-Vía Campesina Youth Encampment in Colombia: In recent years the CLOC-Vía Campesina has strengthened the participation of young people in its organizations and grassroots communities, with youth assemblies and encampments in the countries of the Southern Cone, Central America and North America with participation from thousands of young peasant farmers from across the continent. Soon the first Vía Campesina youth encampment in Colombia will take place, aiming to strengthen youth organization in the region and bring together and promote the integration of peasant, urban, black, indigenous and student-based youth organizations.

3) Seventh National Days of Peasant and Indigenous Experiences: The National Days of Peasant and Indigenous Experiences, a two-week process of exchange of experiences, realities, knowledge and skills, has taken place every year since 2005 in rural peasant and indigenous territories in Cauca and Sur de Bolivar departments. This process has been built by the FEAC, the Free Land Agroecology Collective, the Area of Encounter for Education and Culture (ZEPAC), and many other organizations. [1]

Forum Objectives

  • Build an arena to facilitate meeting, integration and political training for organized young people connected to social movements in Latin America.
  • Promote the mobilisation and unity of young people in Colombia and Latin America.
  • Exchange experiences, knowledge, ideas and proposals among different youth and student organizations (rural and urban) in Latin America.
  • Bring attention to the difficult situation faced by young people in Latin America and the reality of the Colombian situation.
  • Strengthen coordination between CONCLAEA and the CLOC-Vía Campesina, and in the process contribute to the unity of the Latin American social movement.

The central topics to be discussed in the forum will be:

  • World, Latin American and Colombian context.
  • Policies exploiting mother earth.
  • Strategies of domination and experiences of resistance in Latin America.
  • The role of young people in processes of change in Latin America.

There will be keynote speeches, forums, panel sessions, collective activities in workshops and roundtable discussions on each of the issues. Young people will also have the experience of accompanying indigenous and peasant families in their daily activities over a period of two weeks. This will raise awareness and foster solidarity and mutual aid between peasants and young people around issues involving territory, identity and resistance.

Find here soon experiences of some of Civis’ partner organizations that will participate in the International Forum.
